New research by power tools provider Worx reveals children would rather have homemade gifts than TVs this Christmas
It’s the time of year that sees Brits splash an average of £324.93 per household – or £2.4 billion[ii] across the country – on Christmas gifts alone. However, new research by power tools provider Worx suggests this big spending might not be the right way to go about choosing gifts for our children, as 64% believe a homemade gift is more special than a shop-bought one.
With 37% of kids revealing that receiving gifts is one of their favourite parts of the festivities, it’s no wonder the pressure is on for parents to choose the perfect gifts for their children.
However, what may come as a surprise to parents is the fact that, when asked what they think makes a gift perfect, one in five (20%) claim the best gifts are those homemade by their mum or dad, proving that stockings this Christmas don’t need to be filled to the brim with the latest gadgets.
Also topping the list of “perfect gift” qualities for children are “it’s what I always wanted’ (31%), “it’s thoughtful” (28%) and “nobody else has it” (24%), as well as “it will last me a long time” (18%) and “I know my friends will be jealous of it” (14%).
These findings are some of many that Worx have revealed as part of the DIY Christmas campaign, fronted by Ben Foden, which hopes to encourage parents to hand make gifts for their children this Christmas. The research sheds a light on Christmas through a child’s eyes – looking at everything from most memorable gifts to favourite parts of the festive period.
For the digital generation, it’s not much of a surprise that iPads (22%) and digital cameras (19%) are high on the list of their most memorable gifts. However, showing that youngsters still value sentimentality, homemade gifts (18%) beat out the likes of bikes (16%) TVs (13%) and even holidays (8%) when it comes to gifts that stand out most for children.
The sentimentality doesn’t stop there. On the celebrations themself, kids stated “the school play” (27%), “the build up to Christmas Day” (24%) and “spending lots of time with family” (22%) as their favourite things about the festivities.
When parents were asked the same questions, “it’s thoughtful” (47%), “it’s what I always wanted” (33%) and “it will last me a long time” (25%) came on top for best present qualities, whilst cameras (23%), TVs (20%), homemade gifts (19%) and bikes (19%) topped the list of most memorable presents from their childhood.
Jim Kirkwood, Product and Marketing Director at Worx commented: “This research goes to show that, while kids still go gaga for gadgets, parents don’t need to be spending hundreds of pounds on the latest tech, because what really matters to children is a thoughtful gift that’s built to last.”
“No matter what your level of DIY skill is, we’re encouraging all parents to have a go at making inexpensive, long-lasting gifts this year as these are the ones their children will remember.”
Ben Foden, rugby star and ambassador for Worx DIY Christmas, said: “As a dad, I know how much parents want to make Christmas as exciting and memorable as possible for their children.
“I’m working with Worx to show mums and dads that hand making a gift for your child really isn’t the most difficult thing in the world and that, in years to come, these gifts are the ones your child will cherish most.”
The research has been commissioned by Worx to mark the launch of DIY Christmas – a campaign which hopes to encourage parents to hand make gifts for their children this Christmas. A series of videos have been created to show parents how they can create their own gifts this Christmas.
Parents who get involved with the campaign can win a family mini-break to Chessington World of Adventures Resort and a Home & Garden Starter Kit from Worx, including a Worx SlideDriver, Worxsaw, Worx Sonicrafter, Worx 20V Grass Trimmer and Worx 20V Hedge Trimmer.
