When there’s snow outside and the night’s draw in there’s nothing better than sitting by a log fire and dreaming of spring. After the months of deep golds, frosty silvers and warm reds most of us are ready for a change of environment, one that will reflect our lighter mood and brighter nights.
This year has lots in store for interior décor, from minimalist futuristic designs and bold splashes of colours, to soft muted vintage palettes that bring back the seventies and beyond.
Of course everyone’s taste is different and what may delight one could repulse another, yet there are some common denominators that are emerging already in 2015.
Personally, living rurally just outside Okehampton, I tend to embrace the period, vintage, country living designs as I adore classical interiors that don’t need updating every twelve months as soon as the trends change. I’m fortunate to have Justin, my own Devon Decorator on hand to help if I do fancy a change of scenery however to save him time I’ve taken to buying fabrics and furnishings online to give rooms an instant makeover.
This has developed into a little bit of an obsession and I don’t mind admitting I’m addicted to curtains, yet for the price of a pair I could easily have Devon Decorators strip and repaint the whole room, not just redress the window!
This year even the country colours are making a splash, displaying a statement that’s bound to be heard, the trends are following our favourite gemstones of emerald greens and sapphire blues. Before you worry that to keep up with the Jones’ you’ll need a living room that looks like the bottom of a pond, the trick to these colours is little and often, interspersed with the softer more smoothing shades of natural creams and cashmere greys.
Personally I think our homes in the country could do with this slight shaking up as we add some significant shades in as much or as little as we’d like. With these palettes we can quite easily please everyone, as the feature wall is out, and the one painted shelf is in.
If you are a lover of bold daring colours you can embrace the change by finding some curtains, cushions and throws to complement the hues. If you’re not convinced, start with a small scatter cushion and maybe introduce the colours from there.
Even though magazines such as Country Living and Ideal Homes tell us what we should like this year, living in Malton we have the advantage over the more committed followers of fashion. We can quote simply choose any colour we want and we know our decorators in Malton won’t laugh because the shade is so last year.
In fact this sets us apart from the rest and allows us to experiment and explore, as nobody knows what suits a rural home better than us with country at our core!
If you fancy a change this spring and would like a makeover with the minimum of fuss, give Justin a call now and chat to him about his availability, he currently has weekends and Wednesdays free and is building up many references that show how pleased the locals are with his perfect services! He also promises not to snigger if you call this decorator in Devon requesting a living room papered with the faces of Take That – he’ll simply make sure they all line up
